I prefer the adapters using Ford filters also, not because of the bypass, but because I think the adapters might be less likely to leak, I do replace the pal nut with an aluminum AN nut also. No real reason but also no leaks.
I put the canister back on and got rid of the spin on adapter when I bought my '63 last year. I only put 500-700 miles a year on, so I am only changing the oil and filter once a year. Little more work than a spin on but I am not doing it often.
