If the 555 intake bowl looks like a 379 head's intake bowl, that's bad. If it's smaller than a 333 bowl, that's bad. It is not difficult to see the difference, it is a big difference. In fact, there is not enough port wall thickness in a 379 head to open it up to a 333/817 head bowl size. This is something I checked with my sonic tester a few years ago. The 333/817 (and possibly 1147) is so much more advanced over a 379 it is like it was designed 25 years later. Again, just my opinion.

I think the tell tail sign of the larger port, small port heads are the bumps in the intake runner?

My 333's have no bumps. I measured and my intake ports are the same as this 555's.

Look with your fingers. I've never seen any without the bumps. I haven't seen that many though. 817s have the bumps also. Run you finger on the floor of the port. I would guess guys would smooth them out if they did a port match.

My 348 with 333's was a fire truck motor, still had the truck water pump, intake, distributor, and 4gc with governor, so can't imagine anyone would have done any porting?

Don.

Anyone know if you can measure the cc's in there with putty and what cc would be good or not good?

I ran my finger over the edge of the bowl where the valve stops and it looks like it can be smoothed off for bigger valves. Not sure why there are no bumps either. More questions than answers with these heads

And, I guess what I'm asking is it worth the bowl work, seems like it has big ports like the 333 so I'm assuming the bowls can be worked to match???

Wonder why different 333 castings? Maybe a date when the bumps came or went, whatever the case may be.

Models, these being 555's they seem to be weird, unless someone can say for sure Don and I are going to put a 333 and the 555 side by side and compare. The top of the bowl(head face) is big enough for the big valves but we are not sure on the opening. Can it be milled out? Not sure.

So did you come up with the 555 as good property or bad? Also I thought I bought a 409 because of the dipstick.... 1000011376.jpg

More than likely the 555 is a new casting of the 379. 333's share the runner/bowl size with the 817 and 1147performance heads but come with the smaller valves in them from the factory. The 333's can take a big 2.19 intake valve easy (up to 2.25), the 379 won't go much bigger then maybe a 2.06. 379's have tiny runners and tiny bowls over the valves. Not much can really be done with a 379. Stuff a piece of wire down the runners and find the widest and tallest part of the heads and report back to us with that number.

The casting says 6-7-61
