Setting valve lash

Setting valve lash isn't hard when you know how. First, I recommend installing timing tape on your balancer. Available at most any auto parts store, this inexpensive tape is also useful for finding total timing. To do this without the timing tape, you'll need to mark off 90 degree segments onto your balancer.

Step: With balancer set at: adjust intake adjust exhaust
1 TDC on #1 (firing stroke) 2 8
2 turn to 270 degrees 1 4
3 turn to 180 degrees 8 3
4 turn to 90 degrees 4 6
5 turn to 0 degrees 3 5
6 turn to 270 degrees 6 7
7 turn to 180 degrees 5 2
8 turn to 90 degrees 7 1

Step #1: Turn balancer clockwise to 0, #1 piston needs to be at top dead center on the firing stroke. To confirm it is on the firing stroke, both rockers on #1 should be loose and both valves closed. If they are not, you need to turn once more around to 0. Then you can adjust the intake valve on #2 and the exhaust valve on #8 as per the chart above.

Step 2: Rotate balancer clockwise to 270 degrees. Then you can adjust the intake valve on #1 and the exhaust valve on #4.

Step 3 thru 8: Just repeat the procedure using the chart.
