Hey guys...

about 3 months ago i finally brought a 409 engine, it is one of the missing pieces to a 63 SS Build i have been doing .
For the past 5 years i have been looking for a 63 409 425hp block cast #3830814. After
looking , giving up, looking, giving up when i found one , a guy up in Michigan had one for sale saying he had one that was almost complete had been totally rebuilt, was a 425hp 409 block casting number #3830814 with an x on the block( block had been decked seller said no suffix code), hp heads 3814690, dual manifold with matching number carter carbs , solid lifters ,fuel lines, extra bits and pieces ,but no pullies, Great i thought gave him a call and negotiated a price and brought it. Next mission was getting it back safely to Australia where i live.. 7 weeks latter i got it.
Wow i thought as we took it out of the create it was just as the seller described, but the first thing i noticed next to the big old shiny rocker covers was surface rust on the heads where the manifold sits.. thought thats strange:scratch before going to get a case of beer and welcoming the new edition into the family.
The next day i pulled it apart. totally apart found that the heads were indeed what was described but no rockers and roller rockers is what its set up for, but they do have some nice stainless big valves, found some what looks like new ross pistons, the crank i could not find a casting number of 7 digits but found 4 digits?
Everything looks good too me apart from that it has relief notches ??? Was caught right off guard with thinking that an "X" on the block with #3830814 was a passenger car only block!! The engine had surface rust and looked like it had been given a quick paint...so cleaned every thing up and took it too a specialist, inspect it and give it a measure up to see what it actually is. pick it all up tomorrow.:crazy

Big question is will i get the 425hp out of this engine and will putting a 4 speed behind it going to be a problem.

Welcome...great looking car. Sorry to hear the engine isn't what it was supposed to be, but a truck block is still a great foundation and it sounds like you got some nice heads and pistons too. If you have to bore the block....you can still sell the pistons to get back some of your investment.

Hi there, welcome to the sight!! Good luck with the build, will be a lot of fun especially with the 4 speed. Will not be a problem with a 4 speed, get the 168 tooth flywheel, the big bell housing. If you can't find a correct bell housing use the GM 621 or a lakewood bell housing.Make sure You buy 409 clutch linkage and the 409 z bar cross shaft. The small block Z bar or cross shaft will not work properly, the ears coming off of it are at the wrong angle for the 409 engine set up.. Also if your car was an automatic you will need to install a pivot ball on the engine(just screws in over the oil filter area) and a frame clutch bracket onto the frame to operate the cross shaft .Other than that everything should be a go.!!! Best of like on the build, you will not believe this monster, the power, the torque that you will experience with this set-up. GREAT DECISION!!!!.No other engine puts out a sound like a 409. Have fun!!!! :cheers John

Welcome! Don't concern yourself about the truck block. Built right it will provide all the power you need! ;)

The only real difference with the truck block is the notch at the top of the cylinder. It will lower the compression about 3/4's of a point but that's not really a problem assuming they figured that in when they ordered the pistons for the engine.
If the drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan, facing straight down, that will also be off of a truck engine.
Passenger car blocks do bring higher prices but really, the truck blocks are just as good. It's really things like the heads, cam and intake that make the high performance engines build the big power.
Nice looking car! that engine's going to look great in there! :beer

i had a look at my block today down at the shop , and recovered that one of the relief notches had had some kind of work done to it??? it was ruff at first but today when he was smoothing it of he noticed 2 hair line crack , one at the top and one at the bottom? They are only hair line and do not go into the block its self.
I tried to attach a photo but could only attach this, if any body is keen to have a look at it , please send me an e mail.. ewyatt63@gmail.com ill send some pics..

Has anybody had this problem and aid it a problem??
:scratch

Heat supply for the automatic choke. One line brings air from the carb,it then flows, drawn by the vacuum from the choke housing, to the choke coil.
