Rearend swap

Found a 61 vette posi, for cheap would this be a swap for my 63 they say its a 17 spline and it is just the posi unit no ring gear pr pinion .I saw where they need some clearance mods in my housing.

Any info on how to tell if a 3 or 4 series carrier with out a ring and pinion

It looks like the pinion got close to the posi.

Yes the ring gear broke

almost all of them have some chew marks on them.

Post a photo of the flange where the ring gear is to be bolted.

I just checked a 3 series open I have setting around and it measures 2 1/4 inch from the flat surface to the ring gear mount.
Looks like yours is 2 1/2 so I would say it's a 4 series.

I agree, series 4. No beveled edge.

You might want to post a "wanted" ad here for a used P case posi third member with like 3.36 or gear ratio you are looking for. Someone may have one close enough to make it worthwhile for you to get it or it could be put on a pallet and shipped with Fastenal.
