Looks German. Maybe Mercedes?
I like that assembly line. Great way to store motors. Up and out of the way.
I saw this photo before and tried to identify it with no luck, i worked on German cars for about 35 years and never came across an engine like it. With the bump out on the front of the valve cover I was thinking it is an over head cam. I asked a lot of guys I know who have been in the business along time and no seems to know. My interest has been Piked again
