valve covers and spark plug support bracket(s)

I have a question that has been bothering me for quite some time now. Why do I see many of the valve cover pairs for the 409 (including my own) only have one spark plug cable support bracket on one side? How were these cables then routed? Every completed engine that I see has the brackets on...

Bud Light starting to get banned in bars

Never really understood the bud light thing, but it will now be forever known as the "Queer Beer".

A few more billion for the war!

Unfortunately, much of this money to Ukraine is going to be trickled back as fundraising for the democrats in upcoming elections.

    Help with 409 number identification

Can any of this be explained by my block being cast at the Central Foundry Division rather than the Tonawanda Foundry.

    Help with 409 number identification

Though the assembly date and possibly VIN might be interesting, I really don't understand why the factory would bother giving a Julian Date code "233" for the month and day without offering any clue as to the year it was cast? Those other numbers don't offer anything else?

    Help with 409 number identification

Thanks everyone for the help. I may try removing some paint at some point, but now looking more closely, I'm thinking that the decking is a great theory. I didn't realize that the stamping pad appears to be in exactly the same plane as the cylinder head surface. The original machine shop...

    Help with 409 number identification

I was thinking of removing the paint, but I am guessing that I will just find a smooth surface. I see the divots that you are referring to but I also see some casting marks as well (more apparent in the higher res pic). Not sure if this was done with a hand-held grinder but who knows. Here's...

    Help with 409 number identification

This is worse than looking for the VIN on the frame of my '49 F1. I guess it'll remain a mystery.

    Help with 409 number identification

My mistake on the "casting" date. If I am looking at the correct location, the pad on the passenger front side looks clean. I can't imagine decking would remove the entire number? I was under the impression that you guys just needed a picture of the shadow cast by one of these engines to...

    Help with 409 number identification

Still can't find the typical suffix code, but I think that is because it came from the Central Foundry Division (marked "CFD") rather than the Tonawanda plant. The original machine shop (Elby's Automotive Machine Shop in Dublin, CA) that rebuilt the engine on 2/2/2012 had made a note on the...

    Help with 409 number identification

I have not been able to locate a suffix code as of yet, but I was told that it was a "QG" which was for a 340HP Pass. Car.

    Help with 409 number identification

Hi Folks. I've been struggling with this for awhile now, but so far here is my interpretation of what my 409 engine is: 1. 1964 since casting is 3844422 and has “x” On Block. 2. CFD casting indicates that it came from the Central Foundry Division. 3. By the Julian Date Code "233" (leap year)...

    Debt forgiveness

So sorry that this is my first post, but it really has me pi$$ed! I've been saving for my kids tuition since each one was born. My oldest son is now 20 and we can pay for his out of state tuition from my 529 investments. Now, finally, at age 61, I got my first 409 (going into a '57 Bel Air)...
